sunglasses, sweatshirts and sam adams

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Those are the three basic things I needed for my trip to the Cape last weekend.  Come to think of it, sunglasses, sweatshirts and Sam Adams are really the only things you need on Cape Cod.  Other than a bathing suit in the summer, it’s usually pretty sunny, guaranteed to be cool at night, and let’s face it…there’s only a handful of things to do on the Cape.  When you’re not at the beach or mini golfing, you drink just to pass time by.  And when you’re in Massachusetts, you have to drink Sam (but then again, I always want to drink Sam).  So, my trip to Hyannis was filled with the three basics, plus Brett, my family and my uncle’s family.  We went mini golfing and played lots of ski-ball.  Ski-ball is seriously the greatest game ever and I could play it all day long.  When I get my own house, I’m going to have a ski-ball machine in my basement.  We went to Falmouth so my dad could get his clamming license.  We went to the Christmas Tree Shop (a mandatory stop) and the Cape Cod Mall where the lady at Barnes and Noble thought me and my 16 year old sister were twins.  When I said I was 25, the two cashiers told me they hated me.  Haha.

This weekend is Bamboozle and I’m excited for that.  Right now, it’s supposed to rain on Saturday so I hope the forecast changes between now and then to sunny and warm!

I’ve seemed to forget the warmth of the sun.

I guess it’s been a while since I last updated.  Lots of random things going on to talk about I guess.  A couple of weekends ago, Brett and I went to Waltham for Courtney’s bridal shower and Erica’s confirmation.  I went to the shower with Diane…it was at Skyline at Marina Bay.  It was really nice, they had huge windows overlooking the bay and the boats.  She got so many martini glasses, she’s going to need a china cabinet just to house them all.  We also went out to dinner with Christina, Court, Joe and Cort which was wicked fun.  If you haven’t tried the fried mac & cheese from TGIFriday’s I suggest you do so because it’s soooooooo good.

This past weekend was super nice too; mostly because it was on the relaxing side.  Friday night, we watched Bourne Ultimatum.  Saturday was gorgeous out so we went for a run and were on our way home when we saw a sign for an open house at this new condo complex near our house.  The building looks like a freekin school and just from the outside we could tell that they didn’t do a super quality job.  We were curious to see what the inside was like so we went for a tour.  The nice thing about the building was that they offered you lots of choices for condos.  They didn’t all look the same, they were all different, with different sized rooms so you had options for your price range.  The crappy thing about them was that they did a shoddy job on construction.  Some things weren’t level, the quality of work wasn’t great and sometimes you were asking, “why did they put that there??”  Overall we weren’t that impressed, so we went home.  Later on we had a picnic in Astoria Park, took a walk along the river and had ice cream from Mr. Softee.  That night we went into the city for dinner and met up with a customer of Brett’s at a bar and had some drinks.  Yesterday we did absolutely nothing and it was wonderful.

Later this week we’re going to the Cape with my family.  I can’t wait to get out of the city for a long weekend.  I totally need it!

Minus the Bear…

…was awesome last night.  They played at Webster Hall (I can never get used to saying Webster Hall, it’s just habit for me to say Webster Theatre).  Not the best venue on earth, with the crappy sound and all, but they do have great lighting there.  I could tell the singer was still sick (they canceled a show earlier in the week due to sickness) but they still sounded great.  They played a lot off of Planet of Ice but did fit in a couple of songs off of Menos El Oso (Memphis & 53rd and The Fix) and a few older ones (Thanks For the Killer Game of Crisco Twister, for one).  The encore was a bit dull for me, one from Planet of Ice and 2 older ones.  I don’t even know what songs the last two were because I’m not much of a fan of their earlier stuff.  For me, their older stuff isn’t as cohesive and the lyrics aren’t written as well as their last two albums.  Don’t get me wrong, the old stuff isn’t bad…it just doesn’t really hold my interest.  In my opinion, Menos El Oso and Planet of Ice are just freekin perfect.

With that said, Portugal. The Man and The Big Sleep opened up the night.  I made it for about two and a half Portugal. The Man songs, and from what I could tell, were great and the crowd thought so too.  The Big Sleep on the other hand…not so much.  Not much love from the audience either, just polite clapping really.

Here’s some shots of Minus the Bear from the show.  I didn’t take them (I forgot my camera!), but photo credit is given:

The Webster “starry night” background (as I like to call it) and lots of pink lighting fit perfectly with the whole Planet of Ice theme.  All in all, their set was awesome.  They’re one of my favorite bands!

I suggest you check out Minus the Bear for yourself here
Tonight, I’m going to see Lannen Fall, which you can check out here.

So I’m listening to a band called We The Kings and each time I listen to the album, I notice how similar their songs sound like other artists songs.  They mostly sound like All American Rejects and Boys Like Girls songs.  Just like AAR and BLG, WTK write catchy-as-fuck pop rock songs that have the ability to cross over into the mainstream top 40.  They all also have the three letter acronym going for them.  And mediocre band names.  We The Kings wrote a song called All Again For You and the verse’s melody is exactly like Boys Like Girls’ Five Minutes to Midnight.  The guitar intro to WTK’s Secret Valentine sounds exactly like the melody to AAR’s Paper Heart.  Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not bashing We The Kings in any way because I like them.  This post is more…observational.  I could use Mayday Parade as another example.  They have a song that sounds like Brand New and another that sounds like Panic (exclamation point days).

Ok, I guess that’s all I have time for.  I need to go get Brett and we’re going to see Minus the Bear tonight!  I’m soooooo excited!  Yay!

argh.

The end.
